Why blogging is like your cat

Do you remember when you adopted your first cat or dog? The excitement surrounding this loveable ball of fur, the fun of picking out its bed, food dish, and arranging a special area in the house?

By the end of the first week, you’d also discovered that Fluffy needed two meals a day, regular bathroom breaks, and chewed through toys like you eat chocolate.

The same process happens with blogs. Perhaps you’d heard they’re a great way to help customers love your products. You felt excitement at connecting with people in new, and more immediate ways. And it felt fun and stimulating to pick out a blog design and yummy pictures that showed exactly what you wanted to communicate.

But, like dogs, cats, hamsters, and horses, blogs need to be fed. They need regular updates that help clients. They chew through all your pictures – and then some. You receive customer feedback and want to get those interactions right.

Don’t abandon that blog. Here are three solutions for making CEO and company blogs successful:

  • CEOs have plenty to do, so get those weekly blog posts ghost-written. Keep the focus on what you give to clients, rather than pitch for sales. Giving advice helps people come toward you. Keep your keywords for Search Engine Optimization a subtle part of your text.
  • Open the blog to become a Group Blog. Select several employees who would like to rotate through topics. Launch the changes behind a firewall for a few weeks. Have your new bloggers sign an agreement that they will stay in line with company tone, and give them clear working parameters.
  • Create a blog on a certain topic that your customers love. Make sure the topic can sustain itself by drafting several months of topic ideas in advance. Think about how you will keep the blog fresh and in line with changes in your industry. Will you include links to newspaper and magazine articles? Other blogs?

Feed your blog with the help of an experienced, professional writer. I blog where good things are healthy, kind, and free: www.simplyhugyourself.com. Whether you need help brainstorming topics, weekly posts, or blogging advice, I can help. 614-579-3479. Cynthia Rosi, Columbus Freelance Writer.
